Programs That Lower What You Pay

Living on a pension or Social Security check makes every Medicare bill feel bigger. The good news is that New Jersey offers some of the more generous assistance programs in the country, and many eligible people never apply.

We help you see which programs you may qualify for and how they work with the plan you choose.

State Savings Programs for Premiums

These state-run programs use Medicaid funds to cover some Medicare costs for residents below specific income and asset thresholds.

  • QMB covers premiums for Parts A and B along with most cost sharing
  • SLMB takes care of the Part B premium
  • QI also handles the Part B premium while yearly funds last

Having the Part B premium paid puts more than $2,400 back in your pocket over a year. Qualifying for any of these also makes you eligible for Extra Help automatically.

Extra Help With Drug Costs

Run by the federal government, it trims drug plan premiums and pharmacy costs. Applications go through Social Security at no cost, and approval can also open special enrollment chances.

PAAD and Senior Gold

PAAD, the state's drug assistance program for older and disabled residents, helps qualifying people age 65 and up, or those with a disability, so they pay a small fixed copay for covered prescriptions. Senior Gold reaches a slightly higher income bracket than PAAD allows.

Both work alongside Part D, so choosing a plan that coordinates well with them matters. We take that into account in every comparison.

Local Help in Mercer County

Mercer County's Aging and Disability Resource Connection can help with applications for benefits, home care and other services for older adults and caregivers.
